Competition – Ideas for 21st Century Economist

22. February 2019

A new year calls for new thinking so let’s discover the best economic ideas of 2019!

Kate Raworth’s book “Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist” proposes seven mindset shifts to make economics fit for addressing this century’s challenges. But many other shifts are needed too so, in order to explore them, we decided to launch a competition based on this challenge: What’s the 8th way to think like a 21st century economist? And can you communicate it in 3 minutes or less?

We’ve got a fantastic panel of economic re-thinkers who are ready to review your entries and select the very best as winners. So get rethinking!

Criteria for entries:

The competition is open internationally, to both individuals and groups, and submissions can be made under one of three categories:

  1. school students
  2. university students (undergraduate, masters and PhD)
  3. everyone else

Entries can be submitted as text (pdf), video (mp4), audio (mp4), slideshow (ppt or keynote) or any other format – so long as your entry can be:

  • experienced and shared online
  • experienced in three minutes or less (1,000 words max for text entries)

Entries can be submitted in any language so long as English translation / subtitling is also provided for the panel of judges.

You can submit more than one idea for the ‘8th way to think’, but each idea must be submitted as a separate entry.

Judging Criteria:

The ‘seven ways to think like a 21st century economist’ set out in Doughnut Economics are not specific policies, but rather a series of mindset shifts that can be applied in a wide range of contexts internationally (here’s a text summary of the seven ways, along with a one-minute animation for each). Submissions for ‘the 8th way to think’ should aim not to duplicate these seven, but instead complement or counter them. Judges will be selecting the prize-winning entries on the basis of:

  • the brilliance of their ideas
  • the importance of their implications
  • the clarity of their communication

Prizes:

1st prize in each category:

  • A fabulous ‘8th Way To Think’ trophy
  • Your winning entry featured on the Rethinking Economics and Doughnut Economics websites, blogs and social media
  • Signed copies of Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist and Rethinking Economics: an introduction to pluralist economics
  • A video conversation to present and discuss your idea in greater detail with Kate Raworth and members of the Rethinking Economics team

2nd and 3rd prizes in each category:

  • Your winning entry featured on the Rethinking Economics and Doughnut Economics websites, blogs and social media

Closing date: 12 April 2019, at midnight UK time
