To address global challenges such as climate change or poverty, students need knowledge and skills. The new UNESCO publication “Education for Sustainable Development Goals: Learning Objectives” aims at helping teachers to integrate the sustainability objectives into teaching and curricula.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a key instrument for achieving the SDGs. As a holistic approach to education, education for sustainable development does not only refer to learning contents. It is also about transforming teaching methods and learning environments. In this way, students through ESD can also acquire attitudes and values that, in addition to their professional knowledge, enable them to contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful future as required by the SDGs.
The publication is aimed at teachers, educational institutions and political actors. It explains the crucial role of ESD for the achievement of the SDGs, identifies learning objectives and key competences for students, and proposes content and learning activities for each of the 17 sustainability objectives. It also describes how SDGs can be anchored at different levels, from the development of a course to national strategies.
The publication is available for download on the website of UNESCO.
